Here is a new peated expression from Knockdhu distillery: the AnCnoc Cutter. After trying out the Rutter and the Flaughter, we had concluded that the “made in Speyside” peated expressions were worth dwelling on. Does the Cutter confirms this tendency?
Nose : Very fresh, on maritime, mineral and vegetal notes. We clearly smell here a young whisky, with its dry hay notes typical of its young age. The whole thing gets more and more humid, leaving more organic peaty and earthy notes take place, surrounded by a thick smoke. With the opening, we find some citrus fruits notes, particularly lemon and grapefruit, alongside eucalyptus, pepper and camphor scents. A nose that does its job, goes straight to the point, without surprising us. Quite monolithic.
Mouth : It’s fine in the texture, but powerful in the attack. The vegetal notes are really put forward, with hay but also green wood. We nearly have the feeling of biting in a still green hazelnut or walnut, giving kind of a bitterness which is not really pleasant. The second part is more interesting, sweeter, leaving some room to vanilla, honey, ginger, lemon and mint notes. Unfortunately the vegetal bitterness is still here.
Finish : Intense but short. The vegetal notes of green hazelnut come interfering with more noble flavors like ginger or lemon. That’s really a shame. A dry and quite unpleasant side stays in our mouth.
