Glenfarclas experiments a significant setback concerning the quality of its standard bottlings. Let’s take a look to this one, for the German market, produced at 9 000 bottles. Reduction and Oloroso are on the menu…
Nose : We have a sherry that immediately fills the space. Very soft cherries, flaked almonds, mirabelle plums and stewed apples. The fruitiness is in the front but we also have some malt, caramel and spices (cinnamon, pepper). Some flowers also appear (white flowers). The opening reduces the fruity impact, in favor of dehydrated, less pleasant notes. With more time, we get a mix between leather and hot steel, alongside oranges and caramel. Ok, this clearly isn’t a first fill, and we have a washed-out effect a bit annoying (dilution, lack of Sherry punch). Thankfully, there are brief yet incisive comebacks of mirabelles and cherries.
Mouth : The texture isn’t exceptional and it surely lacks amplitude. Citrus fruits show the way. We have orange and Lemon Perrier completing some caramel (partially milky) with cocoa and fruits (apples, cherries). The second part of the mouth finds again lemon, pepper, almonds and vanilla apples. It still is a bit anarchic. It lacks precision at times and we can only regret it.
Finish : Average with a very light persistence. Once again we have citrus fruits and vanilla apples with a bit of milky caramel and spices (cinnamon, black pepper). The aftertaste finds the cherry back but it vanishes too fast.
