The De Molen Dutch brewery always got us used to very beautiful beers, no matter the style. On the menu today, the Tsarina Esra, an Imperial Portel (brown beer of high fermentation, quite strong in alcohol) bottled in march 2013.
Nose : Very expressive, this beer offers wonderful coffee, dark chocolate and gingerbread scents. Some red (cherries, red currants) and dark (blackberries) fruits join the party. It’s perfectly balanced and has an olfactory pleasure we don’t meet every day.
Mouth : The attack is rather soft despite the high alcoholic level. This one is very well integrated and doesn’t come crushing the flavors. The carbonation is very thin, the whole perfectly balanced. A nice sourness gives bite to the caramel, chocolate and spices (cinnamon, candied ginger) notes. I could peacefully taste this during hours without ceasing to enjoy it.
Finish : Of good length, and interesting. We get back the dark chocolate (a tad bitter), the spices and a sour and very lightly woody note.
