After a Glen Spey and a Glencadam that didn’t convince me, let’s take another look to Douglas of Drumlanrig’s range with a rather young Speysider. We hence leave for Auchroisk with this reduced whisky…
Nose : If it hasn’t got much power, the scents are pleasants. We have candied lemon, which gives the impression of having been lightly smoked. The citrus fruit dominates but we also have a bit of malt and also some salt. The nose is slightly waxed (furniture) with a bit of pastry cream. It surely ain’t of great complexity, nor is it destined to major evolution but it ain’t unpleasant. With airing, we get a small supply between vegetation and fruit (strawberry plant) and a small touch of solvent.
Mouth : We clearly get back the candied lemon-malt duo with a salty component which can surprise but which we regularly find in this distillery’s bottlings. However, the flavors aren’t frank and we have a small alcohol sensation but it remains pretty easy to drink. With a bit of water, the alcohol is still here but we gain nerviness.
Finish : It is rather short with a medium persistence. We still have the same lemon-malt common thread but we have a vegetal bitterness that emerges from this end of mouth as well as a hint of freshness. The water allows it to get more body in the end of the race.
