As we tasted the batch 3 of the cask strength and no-age-statement version from Glendronach a year ago, let’s get back today on the roots of this beautiful expression of the range with the batch 1, bottled in 2012.
Nose : At first sense : candied orange, spices (ginger, cinnamon), prune and dark chocolate. Let’s admit we’re pretty well welcomed at Glendronach! Beautiful liquorice notes also join the party. The alcohol is very well integrated and the whole well balanced. The airing brings a vanilla touch far from unpleasant. A few drops of water underline a more vegetal aspect of this whisky (cut grass, flowers).
Mouth : A relatively woody and spicy attack, sustained by a nice power in mouth which pushes the flavors without destroying them. It ain’t of a crazy complexity, but it remains interesting though. Unlike at nose, we’re more on milk chocolate notes than on dark chocolate. The liquorice is still here, the spices too. A light dilution makes it even more gourmet and vanilla flavored.
Finish : Of good length, on spices and walnuts, it also shows a nice bitterness.
